Angry CleaningI have no idea what Google or facebook have to say about this because I have deliberately not looked, wanting to see what happens when I start typing.  I believe, and I may not be the first to discover it, that Angry Cleaning is a thing.  I think I just saw somebody doing it and I think I angrily cleaned stuff myself yesterday or the day before.  Ok, I just Googled it, and it’s a thing.

To clarify, I’m not talking about angry cleaning when you’re angry about the cleaning, or the mess you’re cleaning.  It’s using cleaning as a way of occupying yourself when you’re angry in general.

The first thing to know about angry cleaning, is just go ahead and let it happen.  Stuff will get cleaned, and that’s always good.

Another fascinating fact about it is that true Angry Cleaning is done efficiently and calmly, and that’s always a good thing too.

When we’re distressed, frustated, hurt, overwhelmed, unable to comprehend injustice, and similar very unpleasant emotions, we’ll desperately look for some way to comfort or distract ourselves. 

Often we’ll revert to whatever our habitual coping mechanisms are, and they’re not always ones which are good for us.  Some of our coping mechanisms do seem to do the job though, and if they at least cause no harm, go for it, I say.

Angry cleaning doesn’t seem to be something which is planned or decided.  It just seems to randomly happen sometimes.  Noticing how this happens is quite amusing, which has the added benefit of helping to change our state.  When I say state, I mean the emotional state we find ourselves in.

Messy, overcrowded drawers can be cleared out and organized, grimy patches in the kitchen can be scrubbed to within an inch of their lives, bits of dogs’ rope toys chewed into tiny pieces all over the floor can be picked up, detailed vacuuming in forgotten corners can take place, weeds can be pulled, fridges can be detailed, and all manner of bathroom scrubbing can take place.

Scrubbing, in particular, can be most satisfying.  Polishing is not bad either.

It’s a wonderful distraction, it keeps us busy enough not to do anything stupid, it allows time to pass, and most of all releases pent up energy and stress. 

When it fizzles out, which can sometimes take a while if we get on a roll, it’s great to notice how much calmer we feel, and to enjoy the results.  The shitty situation which led to it may still be there, but nobody got hurt, the edge is taken off, and we can think more clearly.

Sometimes reading a good book or watching some comedy just doesn’t cut it like it usually does, because of the built up, pent up anger and frustration.  This is where doing something physical and active can give us better results.

And of course it’s hilarious.
